The Trauma and Orthopaedic Curriculum is taught in term-based manner to mirror school term times. Attendance is mandatory and trainees are excused from clinical activities at these times. Teaching is geared towards the FRCS examination with dedicated sessions for junior trainees and VIVA sessions for those approaching the exam.
Approximately two thirds of sessions are delivered on Wednesday afternoons at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, and the others are run as all day seminars at varied locations to limit service impact. Speakers are invited not just from North West Thames Hospitals, but from throughout London and the home counties to benefit from the most engaging orthopaedic teachers.
On a two monthly basis Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex Hospital run a case conference afternoon which is built into the teaching timetable. Patients are invited to attend if they have interesting or exam relevant signs, or where the diagnosis or optimum management is uncertain, and a collaborative agreement is sought
